Canola-based Motor Oils

چکیده
MOTOR OILS Motor oils have been utilized since the development of steam engines as a buffer between moving and static engine components. The basic jobs of the lubricant are to prevent metal-to-metal contact and to transfer heat from friction away from the contact point. During the time of steam power, one of the best lubricants available was derived from rapeseed oil. With the development of internal combustion engines, petroleum fuels became popular and a byproduct, the heavier components of refining, became available for lubrication. Early petroleum motor oils were highly ineffective. These oils were composed of basically three hydrocarbon types: naphthalene, paraffin, and aromatics. None of these structures are chemically functional and petroleum chemists quickly found the addition of phosphates and sulfur improved the lubrication ability of petroleum. By chemically functional, the components of petroleum are considered inert materials and basically function as carriers of metallic salts that provide the basic lubrication needs of modern internal combustion engines. Today, numerous chemicals are added to provide functionality to the base oil, many of which result in the product becoming toxic and carcinogenic. One of the most notable being zinc di-phosphate (ZDP). Vegetable oils, however, are excellent in terms of functionality without chemical modification. Vegetable oils, however, tend to loose functionality when exposed to environments where heat, pressure, and metal catalysts are present. This is the environment of a modern, high compression engine. Vegetable oils also tend to become solids (crystalline) at temperatures at/or slightly below freezing (0° to –12°C) and would provide no lubrication on cold days. Consequently, a study was initiated in 1996 to develop a vegetable-based motor oil which maintains its natural lubricity yet performs like a petroleum product in terms of oxidation resistance (a chemical restructuring of the base molecule at high temperatures in excess of 100°C) and resists turning to a crystalline structure at low temperatures (–32°C).

High Performance 4-Cycle Lubricants from Canola
IDENTIFICATION OF A MARKET Developing a new market for an established international crop like canola (Brassica napus L., Brassica rapa L., Brassicaceae) requires significant care and study. Canola has been identified by several authors as a highly desirable food oil. Canola oils are relatively rich in monounsaturated fatty acids and with small percentages of both saturated and polyunsaturated f...
متن کاملEffect of Dietary Vegetable Oils on the Growth Performance and Fatty Acid Composition of Fingerlings of Rainbow Trout,Oncorhynchus mykiss
This study evaluated the suitability of canola and flaxseed oils as source of supplemental dietary lipid for fingerlings of rainbow trout. Triplicate groups of the 30 fingerlings were fed twice daily by iso-nitrogenous, and iso-calorific diets for 8 weeks. Experimental diets consisted of 30.2% protein, 18.6 kJ/g energy and 16.6% lipid from fish oil, canola oil, flaxseed oil, 1:1 blends of fish ...
متن کاملPerformance of Regular and Modified Canola and Soybean Oils in Rotational Frying
Canola and soybean oils both regular and with modified fatty acid compositions by genetic modifications and hydrogenation were compared for frying performance. The frying was conducted at 185 ± 5 °C for up to 12 days where French fries, battered chicken and fish sticks were fried in succession. Modified canola oils, with reduced levels of linolenic acid, accumulated significantly lower amounts ...

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of perilla oil as well as several vegetable oils, including flaxseed oil, canola oil, and rice bran oil on plasma levels of cardioprotective (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids in mice by feeding each vegetable oil for a period of eight weeks. Concentrations of docosapentaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), fish-based (n-3) polyunsatu...
متن کاملDesignation of a Palm-Free Frying Oil Formulation Based on Sunflower, Canola, Corn and Sesame Oils Using D-Optimal Mixture Design
Background and Objectives: Oils used in frying should include special characteristics such as high oxidative stability, prolonged shelf life, low price, abundance and availability and desirable flavors. Nowadays, consumers are further interested in low saturated frying oils. Recently, manufacturers focus on eliminating palm oil derivatives (as a major vegetable source of saturation) from fryin...
متن کاملEffects of Replacing Pork Back Fat with Canola and Flaxseed Oils on Physicochemical Properties of Emulsion Sausages from Spent Layer Meat.
The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of canola and flaxseed oils on the physicochemical properties and sensory quality of emulsion-type sausage made from spent layer meat. Three types of sausage were manufactured with different fat sources: 20% pork back fat (CON), 20% canola oil (CA) and 20% flaxseed oil (FL). The pH value of the CA was significantly higher than the other...
